Titanium Grade 2 (R50400): composition, properties, fittings and flanges

Titanium Grade 2 (UNS R50400, W. Nr. 3.7035, Chinese TA2) is the workhorse commercially pure titanium grade, containing at least 99.2 % titanium with controlled oxygen, iron, carbon, nitrogen and hydrogen. Minimum annealed properties are 345 MPa (50 ksi) tensile strength, 275 MPa (40 ksi) yield strength and 20 % elongation. Its…

  • Hydrometallurgical autoclaves, leaching vessels and reactor linings
  • Flue gas desulphurisation absorber towers and outlet ducting

Welding, forming and machining

Welding
Weld by GTAW with ERTi-2 filler under strict inert shielding - argon trailing shields and backing gas are mandatory to prevent oxygen and nitrogen pick-up. A silvery weld bead indicates proper shielding; straw or blue colours mean the weld is contaminated.
Forming
Cold formability is excellent, comparable to a deep drawing quality stainless steel. Hot form between 540 °C and 760 °C for heavy sections.
Machining
Low thermal conductivity concentrates heat at the cutting edge. Use sharp tools, low cutting speeds, high feed rates and flood coolant; avoid tool dwell and chlorine-based cutting fluids.
Service limits
Do not use in dry chlorine without water present, anhydrous methanol, red fuming nitric acid or strongly reducing acids, where the passive film cannot reform.

Titanium Grade 2 frequently asked questions

How does Titanium Grade 2 compare with 316L stainless steel?
Grade 2 is immune to chloride pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking in seawater where 316L fails, weighs about 40 % less, but has lower strength - 275 MPa yield against 170 MPa yield for 316L, though lower absolute strength than duplex - and costs more per kilogram.
Can Titanium Grade 2 be welded to steel?
Direct fusion welding of titanium to steel produces brittle intermetallics. Practical joints use explosion bonded or roll bonded titanium clad steel transitions, or bolted flanged connections with insulated gasket sets.
What temperature limit applies to Titanium Grade 2?
About 425 °C for continuous service in air. Above approximately 500 °C the protective oxide breaks down and oxygen ingress embrittles the metal; above 800 °C there is a real risk of ignition in pure oxygen.
Which standards cover Grade 2 flanges and elbows?
Forged flanges use ASTM B381 Grade F2 in ASME B16.5 dimensions, and butt weld fittings use ASTM B363 WPT2 in ASME B16.9 or MSS SP-43 dimensions.
Is Grade 2 or Grade 5 better for heat exchangers?
Grade 2 is preferred for tube bundles and shell work because it forms, welds and expands into tube sheets readily at lower cost. Grade 5 is used for high-pressure components and for weight-critical aerospace hardware.
