Titanium Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) (R56400): composition, properties, fittings and flanges
Titanium Grade 5, widely known as Ti-6Al-4V or TC4 (UNS R56400, W. Nr. 3.7165), accounts for roughly half of all titanium produced. It is an alpha-beta alloy containing 5.5-6.75 % aluminium and 3.5-4.5 % vanadium. In the annealed condition it delivers a minimum tensile strength of 895 MPa (130 ksi) and yield strength of 828 MPa…

Welding, forming and machining
- Heat treatment
- Mill anneal at 705-790 °C then air cool. Solution treating at around 955 °C followed by water quench and ageing at 540 °C for 4-8 hours raises strength substantially; do not exceed the beta transus during solution treatment unless a transformed beta structure is specified.
- Welding
- Weldable by GTAW, plasma, electron beam and laser methods with ERTi-5 filler under strict argon shielding. Welded joints should be stress relieved at 540-650 °C where dimensional stability and residual stress control matter.
- Machining
- The combination of low thermal conductivity and high strength at temperature demands rigid setups, sharp carbide tools, low cutting speeds, high feed and copious coolant; never let the tool rub or dwell.
- Forming
- Cold forming is limited by lower room-temperature ductility compared with Grade 2; hot forming and creep forming at 700-900 °C are standard for aerospace parts.
