Long radius centre-to-end A equals 1.5 x NPS in inches converted to millimetres; short radius equals 1.0 x NPS. The 45° long radius centre-to-end dimension B is approximately 0.414 x A, for example 64 mm for NPS 4 and 189 mm for NPS 12. Full tables covering every NPS size are issued with each quotation or on request.

Butt Weld Elbows frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a long radius and a short radius elbow?
A long radius elbow has a centreline radius of 1.5 times the nominal pipe size, giving smoother flow, lower pressure drop and less erosion. A short radius elbow has a radius equal to the nominal pipe size and is used where space is limited or where the line has low velocity and non-abrasive contents.
Do you supply seamless elbows in all sizes?
Nickel alloy elbows up to about NPS 16 are normally produced seamless from pipe. Larger sizes, and sizes with heavy walls, are frequently manufactured by hot forming from plate with a longitudinal weld that is 100 % radiographed before forming.
Which wall thicknesses can you offer?
Schedule 5S, 10S, 40S, 80S and 160 plus XS and XXS, subject to size and grade availability. Light wall fittings are usually quoted to MSS SP-43.
Can you supply 3D or 5D bends for piggable pipelines?
Yes. We produce long radius bends to 3D, 5D and larger with induction bending where required, with ovality and wall thinning controlled to project specification.
How do I check that the elbow material is genuine?
Every fitting carries the heat number stamped or etched on the body, which ties directly to the EN 10204 3.1 certificate showing the ladle analysis and mechanical test results. Positive material identification can be performed on request.
What information do you need for a quotation?
Alloy grade or UNS number, nominal pipe size and schedule or wall thickness, elbow angle and radius, dimensional and material standard, quantity, heat treatment requirement, NDT scope, the EN 10204 3.1 certificate and any third party inspection requirement.
