Duplex stainless steel 2205 (UNS S32205, formerly S31803, W. Nr. 1.4462, ASTM A182 F51 / F60) has a mixed ferritic-austenitic microstructure containing roughly equal proportions of both phases. The chemistry is 22-23 % chromium, 4.5-6.5 % nickel, 3.0-3.5 % molybdenum and 0.14-0.20 % nitrogen. The result is a minimum tensile…

  • Storage tanks, pressure vessels and heat exchangers
  • Structural bridges, architectural and reinforcing applications in coastal areas

Welding, forming and machining

Welding
Weld with ER2209 filler, which is nickel enriched to restore the correct ferrite-austenite balance. Control interpass temperature below 150 °C and heat input between roughly 0.5 and 2.5 kJ/mm to avoid excessive ferrite or sigma phase precipitation.
Heat treatment
Solution anneal at 1020-1100 °C and water quench. Never stress relieve in the 300-950 °C range, which causes sigma phase precipitation and loss of toughness.
Forming
Higher strength means higher forming loads than austenitic grades; allow for greater springback and typically larger bend radii.
Machining
Higher cutting forces than 316L. Use rigid setups, sharp carbide tools and moderate speeds with abundant coolant.

Duplex Stainless Steel 2205 frequently asked questions

What is the difference between UNS S31803 and S32205?
S32205 has tighter limits on chromium, molybdenum and especially nitrogen, guaranteeing a minimum PREN of around 35 and better heat affected zone properties. S32205 is now the preferred specification, and dual certified material to both designations is common.
Is duplex 2205 magnetic?
Yes, the ferritic phase makes it magnetically responsive, unlike fully austenitic stainless steels. This is normal and not a defect.
What temperature limits apply to duplex 2205?
Continuous service is normally limited to about 300 °C, with intermittent duty to about 315 °C. Above roughly 300 °C long-term exposure risks 475 °C embrittlement; codes also apply a low temperature limit around -50 °C.
Can duplex 2205 replace 316L in seawater?
Yes, and it is routinely specified for exactly that reason. It resists chloride pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking far better than 316L while offering double the yield strength.
Which flange and fitting standards apply?
Forged flanges use ASTM A182 Grade F60 in ASME B16.5 dimensions, and butt weld fittings use ASTM A815 in ASME B16.9 dimensions, typically with solution annealing and a ferrite measurement recorded on the certificate.
