Titanium Grade 12 (Ti-0.3Mo-0.8Ni) (R53400): composition, properties, fittings and flanges

Titanium Grade 12 (UNS R53400, W. Nr. 3.7105, Chinese TA10) contains 0.2-0.4 % molybdenum and 0.6-0.9 % nickel, which raise creep strength and improve resistance to crevice corrosion in hot chloride and mildly reducing environments. Minimum annealed properties are higher than Grade 2: 483 MPa (70 ksi) tensile strength, 345 MPa…

Tensile strength, min (annealed)483 MPa / 70 ksi
0.2 % yield strength, min345 MPa / 50 ksi
Elongation in 2 in, min18 %
Typical hardness, annealed180 - 220 HB

Product forms available

Hangbo supplies this grade in the following forms. Sizes outside the listed range can often be produced to order.

  • Seamless and welded pipe and tube
  • Forged flanges to ASME B16.5
  • Elbows, tees and reducers to ASME B16.9
  • Shell and tube heat exchanger bundles

Typical applications

  • Chemical processing vessels and piping in hot chloride service
  • Geothermal brine piping, heat exchangers and separators
  • Desalination plant heat rejection sections and brine recirculation piping
  • Offshore topside seawater systems with higher design pressures
  • Flue gas scrubber internals and mist eliminators
  • Hydrometallurgy autoclaves operating with acidic chloride slurries

Welding, forming and machining

Welding
Weld using ERTi-12 filler with full argon shielding and trailing shields; the alloy is readily weldable and retains corrosion resistance in the weld.
Forming
Cold formability approaches that of Grade 2, allowing standard shop fabrication of heads and shells.
Machining
Standard titanium practice: rigid setups, sharp tools, low speed and generous coolant.
Selection
Choose Grade 12 when Grade 2 crevice corrosion or design stress is marginal but the palladium premium of Grade 7 cannot be justified.

Titanium Grade 12 (Ti-0.3Mo-0.8Ni) frequently asked questions

How much stronger is Grade 12 than Grade 2?
Minimum tensile strength rises from 345 MPa to 483 MPa and yield strength from 275 MPa to 345 MPa, allowing lighter wall designs or higher allowable stress.
Is Grade 12 cheaper than Grade 7?
Yes, typically substantially cheaper, because it uses nickel and molybdenum rather than palladium, though it does not reach Grade 7's crevice corrosion performance.
Where is Grade 12 most commonly specified?
In chemical processing equipment and geothermal brine systems operating above roughly 75 °C where Grade 2 crevice corrosion becomes a risk.
Are Grade 12 fittings available?
Yes. Butt weld fittings to ASTM B363 WPT12 in ASME B16.9 dimensions and forged flanges to ASTM B381 Grade F12 in ASME B16.5 dimensions can be produced to order.
