Titanium Grade 4 (R50700): composition, properties, fittings and flanges

Titanium Grade 4 (R50700, W. Nr. 3.7065) is Commercially pure titanium, highest strength unalloyed grade. Titanium Grade 4 is specified at Titanium Balance. Grade 4 is the strongest unalloyed titanium at 550 MPa tensile, used where a CP grade's corrosion resistance is needed but the wall thickness has to come down to save…

Mechanical properties

Titanium Grade 4 - mechanical properties (stated condition)
Tensile strength, min (annealed)550 MPa / 80 ksi
0.2 % yield strength, min480 MPa / 70 ksi

Product forms available

Hangbo supplies this grade in the following forms. Sizes outside the listed range can often be produced to order.

  • Forged flanges blanks and finished flanges to ASME B16.5, B16.47 Series A/B and B16.36
  • Butt weld elbows, tees, reducers, caps and stub ends to ASME B16.9 and MSS SP-43
  • Seamless pipe and tube to the applicable ASTM / ASME pipe specification
  • Forged rings, discs and hubs machined to your drawing

Typical applications

  • Surgical implants and orthopaedic hardware
  • Airframe structures and hydraulic tubing
  • High-pressure chemical process piping
  • Offshore risers, heat exchangers and seawater systems

Welding, forming and machining

Welding
Weld with ERTi-4 filler under full shielding. Grade 4 has less forming margin than Grade 2, so cold form allowances and bend radii must be increased.
Heat treatment
Anneal at 650 - 760 °C and cool in still air; stress relieve at 480 - 595 °C.
Hot and cold forming
Hot work in the range stated by the mill for this grade, then re-solution or re-age before final machining so that the delivered condition matches the certificate.
Machining
Machine with sharp carbide or high-speed steel tooling, positive rake, constant feed and ample coolant. Never dwell - the surface work-hardens quickly.

Titanium Grade 4 frequently asked questions

What is the chemical composition of Titanium Grade 4?
Titanium Grade 4 is supplied to the following composition limits: Titanium (Ti) Balance; Oxygen (O) 0.40 max; Iron (Fe) 0.50 max; Carbon (C) 0.08 max; Nitrogen (N) 0.05 max; Hydrogen (H) 0.015 max; Other elements, each 0.10 max; Residual balance Remainder. Single figures are maximum limits unless shown as a range; the heat analysis on your EN 10204 3.1 certificate is the governing record.
Which specifications cover Titanium Grade 4 flanges and pipe fittings?
Forged flanges and forging stock: ASTM B381 Grade F-4 · ASME SB-381. Butt weld elbows, tees, reducers and caps: ASTM B363 WPT-4 · ASME SB-363. Hangbo supplies to these specifications with dimensional compliance to ASME B16.5, B16.47 or B16.9 as applicable.
What is Titanium Grade 4 normally used for?
The main uses are surgical implants and orthopaedic hardware; airframe structures and hydraulic tubing; high-pressure chemical process piping. Buyers pick it where the alternative would be a lower alloyed grade that would not survive the service.
Can Hangbo supply Titanium Grade 4 elbows, tees and flanges from stock or to order?
Yes. We forge and machine flanges to ASME B16.5 and B16.47, form butt weld elbows and tees to ASME B16.9, and supply matching seamless pipe, all from the same heat where required so that the whole spool carries one set of mechanical properties. Lead times depend on size and quantity - send the drawing or the line list for a firm quote.
