Nickel 200 / Nickel 201 (N02200 / N02201): composition, properties, fittings and flanges

Nickel 200 (UNS N02200, W. Nr. 2.4066) and Nickel 201 (UNS N02201, W. Nr. 2.4068) are commercially pure wrought nickels with a minimum of 99.0 % nickel including cobalt. The two grades share almost identical corrosion behaviour; the difference is carbon - 0.15 % maximum for Nickel 200 against 0.02 % maximum for Nickel 201. That…

Welding, forming and machining

Welding
Weld readily by GTAW, GMAW, SMAW and resistance methods using ERNi-1 filler. Keep the joint clean and avoid sulphur-bearing materials; no preheat required.
Hot forming
Hot work between 1200 °C and 650 °C with good plasticity; anneal at 705-925 °C and cool rapidly to avoid excessive grain growth.
Machining
The high nickel content produces a gummy chip. Use sharp positive rake tools, light feeds and generous cutting fluid for the best finish.
Grade selection
Specify Nickel 201 for any service above about 315 °C, or where the part will be carburised or heated in a carbon-bearing atmosphere, to avoid intergranular graphite.

Nickel 200 / Nickel 201 frequently asked questions

What is the practical difference between Nickel 200 and Nickel 201?
Mainly carbon content. Nickel 200 allows up to 0.15 % carbon and should not be used above roughly 315 °C because dissolved carbon precipitates as intergranular graphite and embrittles the metal. Nickel 201 limits carbon to 0.02 % so it can serve up to about 600 °C and beyond.
Is commercially pure nickel suitable for caustic soda?
Yes. Nickel and high-nickel alloys are essentially immune to caustic alkalis even at high concentration and temperature, which is why Nickel 200 and 201 line evaporators and transfer lines in chlor-alkali plants.
Can pure nickel resist fluorine?
Both grades resist dry fluorine well and are preferred materials for fluorine handling equipment, particularly at elevated temperature.
Which fittings standards apply to Nickel 200 piping?
Butt weld fittings to ASTM B366 WP200 in ASME B16.9 dimensions and forged flanges to ASTM B564 UNS N02200 in ASME B16.5 dimensions.
