Monel 400 (N04400): composition, properties, fittings and flanges

Monel 400 (UNS N04400, W. Nr. 2.4360) is a nickel-copper alloy with 63 % nickel minimum and 28-34 % copper, strengthened only by solid solution. It is one of very few structural alloys that resists hydrofluoric acid at all concentrations up to the boiling point, plus hydrofluorosilicic acid, anhydrous HF and fluorine gas,…

Welding, forming and machining

Welding
Weld readily by GTAW, GMAW, SMAW and SAW with ERNiCu-7 filler. Cleanliness is critical - remove all oil, paint, marking crayons and shop dirt, because sulphur and lead cause hot cracking.
Hot forming
Hot work between 1200 °C and 950 °C followed by annealing at 760-925 °C. Avoid heating in sulphur-bearing atmospheres.
Machining
Machines best in the annealed or stress-relieved condition. Use low-to-medium cutting speeds, positive rake tools and heavy-duty cutting fluids.
Annealing
Anneal at 760-925 °C for stress relief and grain refinement, cooling in air or water according to section size.

Monel 400 frequently asked questions

Can Monel 400 be used with hydrofluoric acid?
Yes, it is the standard material for HF service. It resists hydrofluoric acid at all concentrations up to the atmospheric boiling point, anhydrous HF, hydrofluorosilicic acid and fluorine-bearing environments, provided oxidising contaminants are absent.
How does Monel 400 perform in seawater?
Exceptionally well, particularly under high velocity and turbulence. It resists impingement attack and chloride stress corrosion cracking. Because it is softer than stainless steel, it should be avoided where erosion by suspended solids is severe.
Is Monel 400 magnetic?
Annealed Monel 400 is slightly magnetic at room temperature because its Curie temperature is near ambient, and it becomes non-magnetic when heated above about 100 °C.
When should Monel K-500 be used instead?
Use K-500 when higher strength or hardness is needed - it age hardens to roughly 965 MPa tensile. K-500 retains most of Monel 400's corrosion resistance but is more susceptible to stress corrosion in certain aerated HF vapour and mercury contact conditions.
What are the standard specifications for Monel 400 pipe fittings?
Butt weld fittings use ASTM B366 WP400 in ASME B16.9 dimensions; forged flanges use ASTM B564 UNS N04400 in ASME B16.5 dimensions. Both are supplied with heat-number marking and EN 10204 3.1 certification.
