Nickel 200 vs Nickel 201: the caustic service decision
Why Nickel 201 replaces Nickel 200 above about 315 C: carbon content, graphitisation risk, caustic resistance, mechanical limits and specification notes for flanges and seamless tube.

The carbon issue in plain language
Commercially pure nickel has outstanding resistance to caustic soda across the full range of concentration and temperature, which is why it is the reference material for caustic evaporators. The problem is not corrosion but metallurgy: carbon dissolved in the nickel becomes less soluble as the temperature falls, and over time at elevated temperature it precipitates as graphite along grain boundaries. The grain boundaries lose cohesion and the material becomes brittle without any visible warning.
Nickel 200 and 201 compared
| Item | Nickel 200 | Nickel 201 |
|---|---|---|

| Carbon | 0.15 % maximum | 0.02 % maximum |
| Recommended metal temperature | Below about 315 C | Above 315 C |
| Graphitisation risk | Significant above the limit | Greatly reduced |
| Typical annealed yield | About 150 MPa | About 100 MPa |
| Typical use | Chemical processing, electronics, food | Caustic evaporators, high temperature alkali |
Other limits worth noting
- Oxidising acids are not acceptable. Nickel has no chromium for passivity in oxidising media.
- Sulphur attack. Sulphur bearing environments at temperature form low melting nickel sulphide and should be avoided.
- Strength is low. Both grades have modest yield strength compared with alloyed nickel materials, so design thickness is usually governed by pressure rather than corrosion allowance.
- Magnetostriction and electrical use. Nickel 200 is chosen for electrical and electronic applications where its magnetic and conductivity behaviour matters.
