Where 925 fits between 825 and 718
| Factor | 825 | 925 | 718 |
|---|---|---|---|
| UNS number | N08825 | N09925 | N07718 |
| Nickel | 38 - 46 % | 38 - 46 % | Balance, about 52 % |
| Hardening | Solid solution | Age hardenable | Age hardenable |
| Typical yield strength | About 240 MPa annealed | Well above 825 after ageing | About 1034 MPa aged |
| Corrosion resistance | Excellent in acid and sour | Comparable to 825 | Lower molybdenum |

Age hardening is the point of the alloy
925 is supplied solution annealed for forming and machining, then aged to develop strength. The ageing cycle must be controlled and recorded, because both under ageing and over ageing cost strength, and because hardness is a sour service acceptance criterion rather than just a mechanical property.
- Specify the ageing cycle and require the heat treatment chart.
- State the maximum hardness required by the project specification and require actual readings on the certificate.
- Confirm the certificate quotes actual molybdenum and copper values.
Sour service acceptance
Components for hydrogen sulphide bearing environments must comply with NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156. In practice this means the alloy must be in the correct heat treatment condition, within the specified hardness limit, and free of cold work that raises local hardness. Where the project requires independent verification, documented testing by SGS can be arranged and the resulting third party test report issued with the shipment.
