NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 requirements for flanges in sour service
What sour service compliance means for alloy flanges and fittings: hardness limits, heat treatment conditions, material listings, documentation and the questions to settle before ordering.

What the standard actually controls
NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 addresses cracking of metals in hydrogen sulphide containing environments in oil and gas production. The dominant mechanisms are sulphide stress cracking, stress corrosion cracking, hydrogen induced cracking and stress oriented hydrogen induced cracking. The standard lists accepted materials and, for each, the conditions and hardness limits that must be met.
Hardness is the practical acceptance criterion
| Material | Required condition | Typical hardness limit |
|---|---|---|
| Inconel 625 | Annealed or solution annealed | Commonly controlled around 35 HRC or as listed |
| Inconel 718 | Aged | Commonly up to 40 HRC as listed |
| Incoloy 825 | Annealed | Commonly controlled as listed |
| Hastelloy C-276 | Solution annealed | Commonly controlled as listed |
| Duplex 2205 | Solution annealed | Set by the applicable edition |
Note Limits vary by edition, by environmental severity and by product form. Quote the edition and the environmental parameters on the purchase order and require actual hardness readings on the certificate.
What else has to be controlled
- Cold work. Forming and straightening raise local hardness. Where cold strain exceeds the limit, a subsequent heat treatment is required.
- Weld procedure. Weld metal and the heat affected zone must meet the same requirements as the parent material.
- Marking. Use low stress methods, since a sharp stamp is both a stress raiser and a local hard spot.
- Hardness test location. Agree where readings are taken, particularly on machined versus as forged surfaces.
Documentation to require
State the standard edition, the UNS numbers, the heat treatment conditions and the hardness limits. Require actual hardness readings on the mill test certificate, the heat treatment chart, and the weld procedure qualification where welding is involved. Where the project requires independent verification, documented testing by SGS can be arranged and the third party test report issued with the shipment.
