Stainless 316 (S31600): composition, properties, fittings and flanges

Stainless 316 (S31600, W. Nr. 1.4401) is Molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel. Stainless 316 is specified at Chromium 16.0 - 18.0, Nickel 10.0 - 14.0, Molybdenum 2.00 - 3.00. 316 adds 2 - 3 % molybdenum to the 304 base, which roughly doubles resistance to chloride pitting and crevice attack and makes it the minimum…

Typical applications

  • Chemical, petrochemical and pharmaceutical process piping
  • Marine hardware, boat fittings and coastal architectural work
  • Food, beverage and pharmaceutical clean piping
  • Pulp and paper bleach plant equipment

Welding, forming and machining

Welding
Weld with ER316 or, better, ER316L filler for low-carbon service. Watch heat input on thick sections to avoid sigma phase during prolonged exposure above 600 °C.
Heat treatment
Solution anneal at 1010 - 1120 °C and water quench.
Hot and cold forming
Hot work in the range stated by the mill for this grade, then re-solution or re-age before final machining so that the delivered condition matches the certificate.
Machining
Machine with sharp carbide or high-speed steel tooling, positive rake, constant feed and ample coolant. Never dwell - the surface work-hardens quickly.

Stainless 316 frequently asked questions

What is the chemical composition of Stainless 316?
Stainless 316 is supplied to the following composition limits: Chromium (Cr) 16.0 - 18.0; Nickel (Ni) 10.0 - 14.0; Molybdenum (Mo) 2.00 - 3.00; Carbon (C) 0.08 max; Manganese (Mn) 2.00 max; Silicon (Si) 0.75 max; Phosphorus (P) 0.045 max; Iron (Fe) Balance. Single figures are maximum limits unless shown as a range; the heat analysis on your EN 10204 3.1 certificate is the governing record.
Which specifications cover Stainless 316 flanges and pipe fittings?
Forged flanges and forging stock: ASTM A182 F316 · ASME SA-182. Butt weld elbows, tees, reducers and caps: ASTM A403 WP316 · ASME SA-403. Hangbo supplies to these specifications with dimensional compliance to ASME B16.5, B16.47 or B16.9 as applicable.
What is Stainless 316 normally used for?
The main uses are chemical, petrochemical and pharmaceutical process piping; marine hardware, boat fittings and coastal architectural work; food, beverage and pharmaceutical clean piping. Buyers pick it where the alternative would be a lower alloyed grade that would not survive the service.
Can Hangbo supply Stainless 316 elbows, tees and flanges from stock or to order?
Yes. We forge and machine flanges to ASME B16.5 and B16.47, form butt weld elbows and tees to ASME B16.9, and supply matching seamless pipe, all from the same heat where required so that the whole spool carries one set of mechanical properties. Lead times depend on size and quantity - send the drawing or the line list for a firm quote.
