Monel 502 (N05502): composition, properties, fittings and flanges
Monel 502 (N05502) is Age-hardenable aluminium-bearing nickel-copper alloy. Monel 502 is specified at Nickel 63.0 - 70.0, Copper Balance, Aluminium 2.50 - 3.50. Monel 502 is the aluminium-hardened version of Monel 400: it keeps the seawater and hydrofluoric acid resistance of 400 but roughly doubles the yield strength after…

Mechanical properties
| Tensile strength, min (aged) | 862 MPa / 125 ksi |
|---|---|
| 0.2 % yield strength, min | 620 MPa / 90 ksi |
| Elongation in 2 in, min | 20 % |
| Typical hardness, aged | 26 - 34 HRC |
| Strength gain vs Monel 400 | About double the yield strength |
Warning Values depend on product form, section thickness and heat treatment. Larger sections generally achieve lower strength than thin product; always design against the applicable code allowable stress rather than these figures.

Product forms available
Hangbo supplies this grade in the following forms. Sizes outside the listed range can often be produced to order.
- Forged flanges blanks and finished flanges to ASME B16.5, B16.47 Series A/B and B16.36
- Butt weld elbows, tees, reducers, caps and stub ends to ASME B16.9 and MSS SP-43
- Seamless pipe and tube to the applicable ASTM / ASME pipe specification
- Forged rings, discs and hubs machined to your drawing
Typical applications
- High-strength pump shafts and marine propeller shafts
- Valve stems, fasteners and springs in seawater
- Hydrofluoric acid alkylation plant components
- Downhole and wellhead hardware needing strength and corrosion resistance
Welding, forming and machining
- Welding
- Weld with ERNiCu-7 filler in the annealed condition, then age the finished assembly. The weld metal will be lower in strength than the aged parent metal.
- Heat treatment
- Solution anneal at 980 °C, then age at 590 - 650 °C for 4 to 8 hours and air cool.
- Hot and cold forming
- Hot work in the range stated by the mill for this grade, then re-solution or re-age before final machining so that the delivered condition matches the certificate.
- Machining
- Machine with sharp carbide or high-speed steel tooling, positive rake, constant feed and ample coolant. Never dwell - the surface work-hardens quickly.
