Typical applications

  • Transformer and inductor laminations
  • Relay armatures, pole pieces and magnetic shields
  • Instrument and sensor magnetic circuits
  • Aerospace and defence electromagnetic components

Welding, forming and machining

Welding
Fusion welding is avoided because it destroys the magnetic properties in the heat affected zone. Parts are stamped or cut and then given the final magnetic anneal.
Heat treatment
Final magnetic anneal at 1050 - 1150 °C in dry hydrogen, then controlled cool to develop maximum permeability.
Hot and cold forming
Hot work in the range stated by the mill for this grade, then re-solution or re-age before final machining so that the delivered condition matches the certificate.
Machining
Machine with sharp carbide or high-speed steel tooling, positive rake, constant feed and ample coolant. Never dwell - the surface work-hardens quickly.

Soft Magnetic Alloy 1J50 frequently asked questions

What is the chemical composition of Soft Magnetic Alloy 1J50?
Soft Magnetic Alloy 1J50 is supplied to the following composition limits: Iron (Fe) Balance; Nickel (Ni) 49.0 - 51.0; Manganese (Mn) 0.30 - 0.60; Silicon (Si) 0.15 - 0.30; Carbon (C) 0.03 max; Phosphorus (P) 0.020 max; Sulphur (S) 0.020 max; Copper (Cu) 0.20 max. Single figures are maximum limits unless shown as a range; the heat analysis on your EN 10204 3.1 certificate is the governing record.
Which specifications cover Soft Magnetic Alloy 1J50 flanges and pipe fittings?
Forged flanges and forging stock: To order against GB/T 15018 (1J50). Butt weld elbows, tees, reducers and caps: Not normally supplied. Hangbo supplies to these specifications with dimensional compliance to ASME B16.5, B16.47 or B16.9 as applicable.
What is Soft Magnetic Alloy 1J50 normally used for?
The main uses are transformer and inductor laminations; relay armatures, pole pieces and magnetic shields; instrument and sensor magnetic circuits. Buyers pick it where the alternative would be a lower alloyed grade that would not survive the service.
Can Hangbo supply Soft Magnetic Alloy 1J50 elbows, tees and flanges from stock or to order?
Yes. We forge and machine flanges to ASME B16.5 and B16.47, form butt weld elbows and tees to ASME B16.9, and supply matching seamless pipe, all from the same heat where required so that the whole spool carries one set of mechanical properties. Lead times depend on size and quantity - send the drawing or the line list for a firm quote.
