Super duplex 2507 for subsea and high chloride piping
Super duplex 2507 composition, PREN, subsea and desalination performance, welding controls, impact testing and specification notes for flanges, fittings and seamless tube.

What super actually means
The term super duplex describes alloys with a pitting resistance equivalent number above 40. The higher chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen push both the pitting and crevice thresholds upward, which extends the usable envelope into hot brine and aerated chlorinated seawater where 2205 would crevice under gaskets and deposits.
Composition and properties
| Item | Value | Significance |
|---|---|---|
| UNS number | S32750 | ASTM A182 F53 for forgings |
| Chromium | 24.0 - 26.0 % | Passivity |
| Nickel | 6.0 - 8.0 % | Austenite balance |
| Molybdenum | 3.0 - 5.0 % | Pitting and crevice resistance |
| Nitrogen | 0.24 - 0.32 % | Strength and PREN |
| Yield strength | About 550 MPa | Thinner wall possible |
| Typical PREN | Above 40 | Super duplex threshold |
| Recommended metal temperature | About minus 50 to 300 C | Phase stability limit |
Where 2507 is the right answer
- Subsea manifolds, jumpers and flowlines. High strength reduces wall thickness and weight, which matters on installation vessels.
- Seawater injection and produced water. Handles warm, aerated and chlorinated conditions.
- Desalination brine heaters and recirculation. High chloride and elevated temperature.
- Chemical tanker cargo piping. Resistance to a wide range of cargoes in one material.
Risk controls that must be written into the order
- Solution annealing temperature and water quench, with the heat treatment chart provided.
- Impact testing at the specified temperature, commonly minus 46 C for subsea work.
- Ferrite content of the parent material and of any weld metal.
- Weld procedure with controlled heat input and interpass temperature, using an over alloyed filler such as ER2594.
- Corrosion testing to ASTM G48 where the specification requires it, with the test temperature and acceptance mass loss stated.
