Storage and handling of alloy flanges: protecting the investment
How to store, protect and handle stainless, duplex, nickel alloy and titanium flanges and fittings so that the sealing faces, markings and surface condition are not damaged before installation.

Keep alloys separated from carbon steel
Iron contamination from steel racks, chains, slings and tools is the single most common cause of surface rust complaints on stainless and nickel alloy components. Use dedicated or protected contact points: wooden or polymer dunnage, coated racks, nylon slings, and separate tools.
Protecting the sealing face
| Stage | Protection |
|---|---|
| In the workshop | Face protectors or covers during machining and transfer |
| In storage | Protective discs or covers, stacked with separators |
| In transit | Individual protection, crated with desiccant |
| On site | Keep covers on until immediately before assembly |
Environmental controls
- Keep dry. Moisture in crevices and under covers initiates staining.
- Avoid chlorides. Coastal air, salt contaminated packaging and chloride bearing cleaners all cause problems.
- Keep markings legible. Protect stamped or etched areas, and record heat numbers in the store records.
- Ventilate. Avoid condensation in enclosed containers and crates.
- Titanium needs extra care. Keep it clean and free from iron contact, and avoid any marking materials containing chlorides.
Receipt checks
- Verify the marking against the certificate and the purchase order.
- Confirm the heat number is present and legible.
- Inspect faces, grooves and weld ends for damage.
- Perform positive material identification to the specified coverage.
- Record any damage immediately and quarantine the item rather than installing it.
