Stainless 410 (S41000): composition, properties, fittings and flanges

Stainless 410 (S41000, W. Nr. 1.4006) is Martensitic chromium stainless steel. Stainless 410 is specified at Chromium 11.50 - 13.50, Nickel 0.75 max. 410 is the basic hardenable martensitic stainless: 12 % chromium gives corrosion resistance above carbon steel, and a simple quench and temper takes it to useful hardness for wear…

Hangbo supplies this grade in the following forms. Sizes outside the listed range can often be produced to order.

  • Forged flanges blanks and finished flanges to ASME B16.5, B16.47 Series A/B and B16.36
  • Butt weld elbows, tees, reducers, caps and stub ends to ASME B16.9 and MSS SP-43
  • Seamless pipe and tube to the applicable ASTM / ASME pipe specification
  • Forged rings, discs and hubs machined to your drawing

Typical applications

  • Valve trim, stems, seats and gate components
  • Pump shafts, turbine blades and compressor parts
  • Fasteners, springs and wear-resistant machine parts
  • Refinery and petrochemical internal components

Welding, forming and machining

Welding
Preheat to 200 - 300 °C, weld with ER410 filler and temper immediately after welding. Martensitic grades crack if they are allowed to cool untempered from welding temperature.
Heat treatment
Anneal at 830 - 885 °C and furnace cool, or harden by austenitising at 925 - 1010 °C, oil quench and temper at 205 - 650 °C to the required hardness.
Hot and cold forming
Hot work in the range stated by the mill for this grade, then re-solution or re-age before final machining so that the delivered condition matches the certificate.
Machining
Machine with sharp carbide or high-speed steel tooling, positive rake, constant feed and ample coolant. Never dwell - the surface work-hardens quickly.

Stainless 410 frequently asked questions

What is the chemical composition of Stainless 410?
Stainless 410 is supplied to the following composition limits: Chromium (Cr) 11.50 - 13.50; Carbon (C) 0.08 - 0.15; Manganese (Mn) 1.00 max; Silicon (Si) 1.00 max; Nickel (Ni) 0.75 max; Phosphorus (P) 0.040 max; Sulphur (S) 0.030 max; Iron (Fe) Balance. Single figures are maximum limits unless shown as a range; the heat analysis on your EN 10204 3.1 certificate is the governing record.
Which specifications cover Stainless 410 flanges and pipe fittings?
Forged flanges and forging stock: ASTM A182 F6a · ASME SA-182 (UNS S41000). Butt weld elbows, tees, reducers and caps: ASTM A403 WP410 family or to order. Hangbo supplies to these specifications with dimensional compliance to ASME B16.5, B16.47 or B16.9 as applicable.
What is Stainless 410 normally used for?
The main uses are valve trim, stems, seats and gate components; pump shafts, turbine blades and compressor parts; fasteners, springs and wear-resistant machine parts. Buyers pick it where the alternative would be a lower alloyed grade that would not survive the service.
Can Hangbo supply Stainless 410 elbows, tees and flanges from stock or to order?
Yes. We forge and machine flanges to ASME B16.5 and B16.47, form butt weld elbows and tees to ASME B16.9, and supply matching seamless pipe, all from the same heat where required so that the whole spool carries one set of mechanical properties. Lead times depend on size and quantity - send the drawing or the line list for a firm quote.
