Stainless 316Ti (S31635): composition, properties, fittings and flanges

Stainless 316Ti (S31635, W. Nr. 1.4571) is Titanium-stabilised molybdenum austenitic stainless steel. Stainless 316Ti is specified at Chromium 16.0 - 18.0, Nickel 10.0 - 14.0, Molybdenum 2.00 - 3.00. 316Ti holds titanium at five times the carbon so that the carbon is locked up as TiC, letting the alloy survive long exposure at…

Product forms available

Hangbo supplies this grade in the following forms. Sizes outside the listed range can often be produced to order.

  • Forged flanges blanks and finished flanges to ASME B16.5, B16.47 Series A/B and B16.36
  • Butt weld elbows, tees, reducers, caps and stub ends to ASME B16.9 and MSS SP-43
  • Seamless pipe and tube to the applicable ASTM / ASME pipe specification
  • Forged rings, discs and hubs machined to your drawing

Typical applications

  • Chemical and petrochemical equipment held at 550 - 800 °C
  • Exhaust systems, heat exchangers and superheater tubing
  • Pharmaceutical and food plant with repeated thermal cycling
  • Marine exhaust and offshore hot utility lines

Welding, forming and machining

Welding
Weld with ER318 filler to carry titanium across the joint, or ER316L where the stabilisation is not critical. Titanium-bearing filler gives a fluid slag, so position control matters.
Heat treatment
Stabilise at 870 - 900 °C or solution anneal at 1010 - 1120 °C and quench.
Hot and cold forming
Hot work in the range stated by the mill for this grade, then re-solution or re-age before final machining so that the delivered condition matches the certificate.
Machining
Machine with sharp carbide or high-speed steel tooling, positive rake, constant feed and ample coolant. Never dwell - the surface work-hardens quickly.

Stainless 316Ti frequently asked questions

What is the chemical composition of Stainless 316Ti?
Stainless 316Ti is supplied to the following composition limits: Chromium (Cr) 16.0 - 18.0; Nickel (Ni) 10.0 - 14.0; Molybdenum (Mo) 2.00 - 3.00; Titanium (Ti) 5 x C min to 0.70 max; Carbon (C) 0.08 max; Silicon (Si) 0.75 max; Manganese (Mn) 2.00 max; Iron (Fe) Balance. Single figures are maximum limits unless shown as a range; the heat analysis on your EN 10204 3.1 certificate is the governing record.
Which specifications cover Stainless 316Ti flanges and pipe fittings?
Forged flanges and forging stock: ASTM A182 F316Ti · ASME SA-182. Butt weld elbows, tees, reducers and caps: ASTM A403 WP316Ti · ASME SA-403. Hangbo supplies to these specifications with dimensional compliance to ASME B16.5, B16.47 or B16.9 as applicable.
What is Stainless 316Ti normally used for?
The main uses are chemical and petrochemical equipment held at 550 - 800 °c; exhaust systems, heat exchangers and superheater tubing; pharmaceutical and food plant with repeated thermal cycling. Buyers pick it where the alternative would be a lower alloyed grade that would not survive the service.
Can Hangbo supply Stainless 316Ti elbows, tees and flanges from stock or to order?
Yes. We forge and machine flanges to ASME B16.5 and B16.47, form butt weld elbows and tees to ASME B16.9, and supply matching seamless pipe, all from the same heat where required so that the whole spool carries one set of mechanical properties. Lead times depend on size and quantity - send the drawing or the line list for a firm quote.
